It’s perhaps the highest honor a truck can receive: Truck of Texas. It’s an award bestowed by the Texas Auto Writer’s Association, collection of automotive journalist, at a Central Texas event called Truck Rodeo. For two days, on a sprawling, mountainous ranch in the Hill Country west of Austin, 69 journalists drove 57 vehicles through mud, rain and over hills to evaluate their capabilities on Texas Terrain. Only one truck reigns supreme and this year, the 2019 RAM 1500 came out on top as Truck of Texas.
“TAWA journalists know their trucks, and they picked the new Ram as the clear winner,” said Michael Marrs, TAWA president. “Our members said the truck performed well even in challenging weather conditions during the Hill Country floods this year.”
Each vehicles that is evaluated is placed in it’s respective category and once each journalists has driven them, they score them in five criteria: Interior, Exterior, Performance, Value and Personal Appeal. In addition to the Ram 1500 winning the overall prize, the 2019 Maserati Levante GTS won SUV of Texas and 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio took home CUV of Texas.
“It was also noteworthy that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles swept all the overall awards at this year’s competition,” said Marrs.
TAWA’s Truck of Texas award is a sought after crown and each year all the major manufactures put their best trucks forward to compete. Last year, Ford’s F-150 took home the Truck of Texas trophy. This year, Ram is proud that their 1500 was recognized.
“Being named the Texas Auto Writers Association’s Truck of Texas is the highest honor in the world’s largest pickup market,” said Reid Bigland, Head of Ram Brand and U.S. Sales; Chairman, President and CEO, FCA Canada Inc. “The all-new 2019 Ram 1500 offers the best combination of class exclusive features, refinement capability and efficiency. Winning this award is a challenge, but the Ram 1500 is well suited to the hard-working needs of Texas truck buyers.”
Interestingly, FCA’s UConnect 4C with 12-inch Screen also came away from the Truck Rodeo with the Best Technology Award. This massive, jaw-dropping infotainment system is front and center in the 2019 Ram 1500’s dash. It certainly deserves to win a large award like that in Texas, where everything is bigger.
